Rhode Island Red

The Rhode Island Red is probably one of the most successful chicken breeds in the world!

Rhode Island Reds are held in such high esteem that they’re the official Rhode Island state bird. They were once hugely popular in America, though they declined right along with the small farmer. Today they’re making a comeback due to small flock owners.  Why is it so successful?

They certainly are a bird that requires little in the way of care and are usually extremely healthy.

They are considered a very personable chicken –You will not meet a Rhode Island hen that you don’t like! While just the pleasant company of the Rhode Island Red is enough reason to convince you of their lovability, there is one other thing that makes them a go-to hen for Backyard Chickens all over the world. They know how to lay an egg! They produce big, brown eggs on the regular, providing your family with delicious and nutritious eggs for your breakfast, lunch and dinner. In fact, Rhode Island Red chickens have been known to lay up to 300 eggs annually and in line with their hardy nature, they even lay throughout the colder months of the year!
